This lovely old milk glass jar has clearly lived a life, and apparently it spent part of that life being dramatically decorative.
The creamy white glass body features raised scrollwork panels surrounding delicate transfer decorations of colorful birds, blossoms, leaves, and trailing branches. The soft blue, pink, yellow, and green details give it the romantic, slightly over-the-top charm associated with late Victorian and early 20th-century décor.
The form and decoration are consistent with antique biscuit or cracker jars produced in the Wave Crest tradition. C. F. Monroe’s Wave Crest pieces commonly combined opaque white glass, molded scrollwork, and floral or bird transfer decorations, although many examples were left unsigned. Similar documented jars date to the late 19th or early 20th century.
This example is being sold as the glass jar body only. Its original lid, metal rim, and carrying handle are no longer present. At approximately 6½ inches tall, it still makes a beautiful decorative vessel for dried flowers, brushes, wrapped candies, or anything else deserving a far more elegant container than strictly necessary.
It would also be a wonderful addition to a collection of Victorian art glass, antique milk glass, or beautifully imperfect pieces with plenty of history left to tell.
