This little silverplate vessel is doing an impressive amount of decorative work for something barely over three inches tall. Made by Meriden Silver Plate Co., it has a deeply embossed band of flowers, leaves, and swirling scrollwork that gives it the full Victorian treatment. The base is marked with the Meriden lion trademark, QUADRUPLE PLATE, and pattern number 086.
It was likely made as a toothpick holder or small tabletop vessel, although antique silver manufacturers were wonderfully creative about assigning very specific jobs to very small objects. Today it would also be lovely holding cocktail picks, matches, tiny flowers, or absolutely nothing while still looking important on a shelf.
Measures approximately 3 1/4 inches tall.
Condition: Antique condition with substantial tarnish, darkened patina, surface scratches, rub wear, and areas of visible silverplate loss. The raised floral decoration remains crisp and attractive. Please review the photos closely, as the aged finish is part of this piece's character.
