A New Year apparently once called for toy sheep, teddy bears, watercolor paints, flowers, and excellent penmanship. We have clearly lost something.
This pair of antique New Year postcards includes a charming illustrated children’s card marked “New Year Greetings,” from 1909, with toys and a hand-painted-looking Happy New Year message, plus a floral “A Happy New Year” card with pink blossoms, forget-me-nots, and a small landscape vignette.
The children’s card is the scene-stealer here, but the softer floral card makes a lovely companion. Together they make a distinctive little New Year display or addition to an antique postcard collection.
