Designed by Anthony de Francisci, the Peace Dollar was introduced in 1921 to commemorate the restoration of peace following World War I. The obverse features Liberty wearing a radiant crown, while the reverse depicts a bald eagle resting on a mountaintop above the word PEACE.
This example bears the small “D” mint mark on the reverse, identifying it as a Denver Mint issue. The Denver Mint produced 6,811,000 Peace Dollars in 1923, substantially fewer than the 30.8 million struck in Philadelphia that year.
